The Importance of Amino Acids

Do you know how important amino acids are to your body and muscle building? They are the building blocks of protein and muscle tissue. Sounds pretty important huh? Of the 23 amino acids, nine are considered essential, meaning our body can't produce them and we must obtain them from nutrition or supplementation. Aminos are also important in metabolic process, which means they may play a role in improving certain diseases such as diabetes, obesity, insomnia and arthritis.

My interest in amino acids stems from the benefits it has on my fitness routine. I exercise to build muscle, give me energy and fat loss. I take an amino acid supplement right after my workout on training days and on non-training days I'll take it before bed. Consuming an amino drink immediately after a workout, your muscles are receptive to nutrients so the aminos help with muscle recovery and growth. And because amino acids are delivered immediately to the bloodstream once ingested, they help improve your energy output.

If you don't currently take supplements, it's always a good idea to look into it depending on your health and fitness goals. There's so much out there that sometimes it can be overwhelming, but research goes a long way. But still, I'm a firm believer in if you can get it from food, that's always the best and healthiest option.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, GNC carries BPI Sports' BLOX Pink Lemonade Amino Acid drink mix where a portion of the proceeds will go to breast cancer research. I always love supporting a great cause! Add to that, BLOX tastes great without the chalkiness you get with other powder drinks.
